Portraits of Consequence Exhibition by Simon Occulis

Canadian American poet, novelist, and visual artist, Simon Occulis was born in Los Angeles California. His teenage years were spent in a US Manhattan Project town, Richland Washington, where the military made the plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb, and his high school mascot was the mushroom cloud. After flunking out of school resulting from dyslexia, he embarked upon a long list of factotum occupations like, arctic fisherman, coffee roaster, radio jingle producer, and single parent, to name a few. It was while squatting inside an abandoned church on the Humber River in Toronto, attempting to overcome his learning-disabilities that he stumbled upon the hypnogogic artistic process that propelled him to success with poetry, a surreal experience he has described as, “the spirit possessing him.” After a best-selling collection, Tender in the Age of Fury, and two international recital tours, Pitts changed his name to Simon Occulis, released a novel, the Gospel of Now, and channeled his artistic practice into oil painting, amalgamating influences from pop art, German expressionism, and techniques reminiscent of old masters.

Occulis now lives and works in Montreal, Canada.

Artist Statement:

Spending my teenage years in a Manhattan Project town, where my High School mascot was the mushroom cloud over Nagasaki, shaped my artistic stance more than any other experience. Trying to make sense of my community’s economic dependence upon manufacturing weapons of mass destruction made me examine how the human spirit has vast reaching and unintended consequences, both positive and negative.

With Portraits of Consequence, I have created a series based on people whose existence altered the status quo. The portraits are designed to pull the viewer out of their present state to identify with the subject, allowing them to see their world from a different perspective.

I created the work in a preindustrial mode, making the paint myself, often utilizing out of date pigments, like burnt bones and carbonated lead. The use of bone black helps break down the subject to its base essence, while my use of colour mimics nature, anchoring the human in its environment.

I try to create work that is open to interpretation, making the viewer my co-creator, leaving room for imagination and discussion.

Après un best-seller, Tender in the Age of Fury, et deux tournées internationales de récitals, Pitts change son nom en Simon Occulis, publie un roman, The Gospel of Now, et oriente sa pratique artistique vers la peinture à l'huile, amalgamant des influences du pop art, de l'expressionnisme allemand et des techniques rappelant les anciens maîtres.

Occulis vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Montréal, au Canada.

Déclaration d'artiste:

Le fait d'avoir passé mon adolescence dans une ville participant au projet Manhattan, où la mascotte de mon lycée était le champignon atomique au-dessus de Nagasaki, a façonné ma position artistique plus que toute autre expérience. En essayant de comprendre la dépendance économique de ma communauté à l'égard de la fabrication d'armes de destruction massive, j'ai examiné la façon dont l'esprit humain a de profondes conséquences, positives et négatives, qui ne sont pas intentionnelles.

Avec Portraits of Consequence, j'ai créé une série basée sur des personnes dont l'existence a modifié le statu quo. Les portraits sont conçus pour sortir le spectateur de son état actuel et l'amener à s'identifier au sujet, lui permettant ainsi de voir son monde sous un angle différent.

J'ai créé l'œuvre dans un mode préindustriel, en fabriquant moi-même la peinture et en utilisant souvent des pigments périmés, comme des os brûlés et du plomb carbonisé. L'utilisation du noir d'os permet de réduire le sujet à son essence fondamentale, tandis que mon utilisation de la couleur imite la nature, ancrant l'humain dans son environnement.

J'essaie de créer des œuvres ouvertes à l'interprétation, faisant du spectateur mon cocréateur, laissant place à l'imagination et à la discussion.
