Juste avant la destruction de la planète Krypton, le scientifique Jor-El (Marlon Brando) envoie son fils Kal-El, encore bébé, sur Terre à bord d'un vaisseau spatial. Élevé par des fermiers bienveillants, le jeune Clark (Christopher Reeve) découvre l'origine de ses pouvoirs surhumains et déménage à Metropolis pour combattre le mal.
