Dans le futur de la Terre, une épidémie agricole mondiale et un deuxième « Dust Bowl » rendent peu à peu la planète inhabitable. Le professeur Brand (Michael Caine), brillant physicien de la NASA, travaille sur des plans visant à sauver l'humanité en transportant la population terrestre vers un nouveau monde via un trou de ver.
